Japan's "own Clint Eastwood" visits NZ to promote RWC2011: Tourism NZ

3/03/10

One of Japan's biggest name movie stars will arrive in New Zealand this week, as part of a Tourism New Zealand project to promote the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC).

A news release from Tourism New Zealand says that as well as being an A-list celebrity in Japan, Hiroshi Tachi - Japan's answer to Clint Eastwood - is also a passionate rugby follower and fan of the All Blacks.

Tourism New Zealand regional manager Japan Jason Hill says Hiroshi's love of rugby will make him a valuable ambassador for New Zealand in the lead up to RWC.

"This visit is the first stage of a relationship that we expect will help drive interest in New Zealand as host of the 2011 tournament," said Jason Hill.

"Celebrity endorsement is one of the most effective ways of promoting New Zealand in Japan and Hiroshi's huge profile, combined with his passion for the All Blacks, makes him an ideal opinion leader to work with in the run-up to the World Cup."

Hiroshi will spend six days in New Zealand, experiencing some of New Zealand's best premium accommodation and activities. He will also get a chance to visit Eden Park.

Tourism New Zealand first worked with Hiroshi when he took part in the opening ceremony for the Giant Rugby Ball venue in Tokyo late last year. His appearance at the Ball helped ensure huge exposure for the Ball during its time in Japan.
