Top tour operators recognised by the industry

Three of New Zealand’s top tourism operators have been celebrated as the best in the business at an awards ceremony held at Distinction Luxmore Hotel, Te Anau  during the annual at the Tourism Export Council (TEC) conference.

NZ Journeys was named Inbound Tour Operator of the Year, while a Rotorua based activity operator Rotorua Canopy Tours received the Operator of the Year Award, demonstrating the calibre of the products and their relationships across inbound members. Trips & Trampsfrom the local Fiordland region won the inaugural best Small Business Operator award.

NZ Journeys – Inbound Tour Operator of the Year 2017

A media release from TEC says this year allied members of TEC  voted NZ Journeys their number one inbound tour operator.  Director John Dam says, “This award is an acknowledgement of my belief, during the past 31 years in tourism in New Zealand, that I want to give back to the country that adopted me by providing my modest contribution to the industry.”

Rotorua Canopy Tours – Operator of the Year 2017

Inbound operators of TEC have voted Rotorua Canopy Tours their number one allied supplier. Nicki Dent, Sales and Marketing Manager at Rotorua Canopy Tours, comments, “We’re really stoked and it’s a great way to celebrate our fifth anniversary.”

Finalists in the same category were Ngai Tahu Tourism and the nationwide Scenic Hotel Group.

Trips and Tramps– Best Small Business Operator 2017

Now in its second year, the award for 2017 is the Small Business Operator went to a local Fiordland based business; Fiordland Trips & Tramps.TEC says that along with the major national and regional operators, our industry is enriched with a huge variety of small, micro and owner-operator businesses and they want to recognise their contribution to New Zealand’s visitor experience. The award application was open to both inbound and allied members. 

Fiordland Trips & Tramps owner Steve Norris comments, “We’re extremely happy for the Fiordland Trips and Tramps to have won.  The award means a lot for us and the whole Fiordland community.”

Ecozip Adventures and Encounter Kaikoura were the other finalists in this category.

TEC Chairman Martin Horgan says each year the awards are hotly contested as being voted by your peers as being the best in the business for ‘doing good business’ is a great accolade that filters down to all levels of the operator teams. Inbound tour operators nominate allied supplier members and allied members nominate inbound tour operators. The applicants are judged on their innovation, marketing, business operation, communications, accessibility and industry relationships.
